Car Seat Program

• Distributes car seats (as available) to Davidson County residents in need and provides instruction and demonstration in the correct use and installation of the car seat.

• Provides checks and instruction for county residents who have car seats and want to verify correct use and/or proper installation

• Services are provided by a Nationally Certified Child Passenger Safety Technician

Program eligibility requirements

1. Car seat distribution – Davidson County residents meeting financial qualifications of less than 250% poverty level.

2. Car seat use/installation checks and instruction – anyone

You Quit Two Quit

This is a research program through UNC-CH in which Davidson County Health Department is participating to encourage smoking cessation in pregnant and postpartum women.

Program eligibility requirements

Clients who are pregnant or have a child less than one year old and are currently receiving Davidson County Health Department services through its Prenatal, Maternal Child Health, Family Planning or WIC programs

Childbirth (Lamaze) Classes

This program provides instruction regarding what to expect during labor and delivery and the postpartum period. Classes are taught by a Certified Lamaze Instructor

Health Education

The goal of our Health Education section is to develop, maintain, or reinforce positive health behaviors; help change attitudes; and increase knowledge and awareness of health issues, in order to encourage a healthy lifestyle. To accomplish these goals we provide guidance on educational methods, techniques, and materials to health department staff, work with community organizations and citizens concerned with the delivery of health care and health education. We also provide presentations regarding healthy living to the community.

Health Promotion Activities

These activities promote the over-all health of the community. Currently the focus of these activities include

• Health Food policies – encouraging health food options at events serving food

• Health Eating policies – encouraging participation of restaurants in Winner’s Circle (providing healthy menu options)

• Thomasville City School Wellness Committee – focuses on staff, student, and family wellness activities that promote healthy lifestyle choices

Health Education Activities

Strives to improve the health of Davidson County residents through advocacy, educational initiatives, and improving access to health care services. The Alliance works to identify health needs and resources in the community and work collaboratively to improve the quality, continuity, access, and coordination of health care services. The Alliance has four work groups:

• Access to Care – objective is to increase access to health services for the uninsured and underinsured in Davidson County

• Asthma Coalition – objective is to reduce the burden of asthma in Davidson County

• Health Promotion – objective is to provide information and support to make healthy lifestyle choices regarding physical activity, nutrition, and tobacco use

• Mental Health – objective is to increase access to mental health services in Davidson County

A collaboration with Thomasville City Schools to address the issues surrounding adolescent health – health education staff attend meetings and provide guidance to school personnel regarding adolescent health issues
A collaboration with Thomasville City Schools to provide information and support to prevent sexual activity among teenagers – health education staff teach classes regarding pregnancy prevention
A program to improve access to health information and promote healthy lifestyle choices for county employees – health education staff coordinate educational sessions, provide motivation and support to employees to make healthy lifestyle choices
Health education staff provides news releases to the media regarding health information and services provided by the health department
Health education staff writes grants to seek funds to initiate new programs and maintain current programs
A collaboration between health department and all three school systems – health education staff attend meetings, update school personnel regarding health services available to students and staff, and serve as a resource for school personnel
